Road Trip!

January 5th, 2008

The snow is beautiful but makes for treacherous driving.

The snow is beautiful but makes for treacherous driving.

I love road trips. I just arrived home from the last one of 2007. We traveled around Northern California and the Southern Oregon coast. We saw sun and surf, mountains and snow, city and country, familiar and new. It was a great trip!

It was hard to come home, although I was looking forward to sleeping more than one night in the same place. Then this morning I was enjoying the excellent water pressure in the shower (there are a lot of bad showers out there!), followed by a bowl of my favorite flax cereal, checking the computer, basically enjoying my normal routine.

As I watched the pouring rain out the window, I started to wish I was back in the California sun. The pleasure of my simple morning routine started to fade, then it hit me. The real trick is enjoying the best in what you’re experiencing, when you’re experiencing it. That whole idea of being in the moment. What good is it to have great water pressure when you are only thinking of where you were three days ago? Sure your hair gets cleaner, but your mind stays clogged.

A gorgeous last day of 2007 at the Northern California coast.

So, my new year’s resolution? Practice enjoying my moments, and gently remind myself when my mind wanders and creates a disconnect and dissatisfaction.

I'm Back and Grateful

January 4th, 2008

I'm back from my unplanned and unannounced blogging sabbatical! I was getting ready to post a new entry and realized just how long its been since I last posted. Oy. I looked at the last date and remembered that I got held up by Thanksgiving.

This seems a little odd, but at that time I was thinking about writing a post on the things I'm grateful for, but it seemed so cliched for Thanksgiving. I wanted to come up with something unique, interesting, FUN! Yeah, well, look what I did. I stopped writing. I'm not particularly grateful for that.

It's a form of perfectionism that results in procrastination. I thought I'd overcome so much of it in my life. So in my 2008 resolution to practice my life kindly and gently, I'll just notice it and move on.

So, here are a few things I'm grateful for, in no particular order:

- My supportive, fun, and inspirational partner and travelmate RP

- My great friends, new and old, near and far

- My Mac

- Good health and a body and mind that cooperates, or at least doesn't complain too much, when I want to try new physical challenges

- My amazing clients who trust me with their greatest hopes and desires

- My colleagues, mentors, trainers, favorite authors, everyone that so willingly shares what they know to help us all

- The readers of this and my other blog, especially those who share with me their thoughts, opinions, recommendations

THANK YOU!

Thank You, I Like Yours Too

October 23rd, 2007

When I was in high school a friend and I were out in the big city. She complimented the shirt of someone we just met. He said something like, "this old thing?" My friend said, "that's not what you're supposed to say. You're supposed to say, 'Thank you…I like yours too.' " I loved that!

I shared the exchange with my family and took the response to new heights. I think my favorite was when I complimented my mom on the pot roast dinner she made and she said, "Thank you, I like yours too." Now, twe-mmm-hmm years later it still crops up in family conversations as an appropriate response to a compliment.

It popped into my head when I got a nice shout-out on a website for my other blog. When I read that, the first thing that popped into my head was, "Thank you, I like yours too." And, P.S., I really do. Check out Kirsten's Bulldog Marketing website if you want to know more about blogging and technology. (She explains it in a way that you can actually understand!)

So anyway, I was thinking about accepting compliments and how some people have such a hard time with it. What's the first thing that pops into your head when someone pays you a compliment? Is it some version of "This old thing?" or is it "Duh, of course" or is it a simple "Thank you."

If your first response is to deflect the compliment, you might want to spend some time thinking about why you think you don't deserve it. Is it simply that you think that's what you should do? Do you have a sense of unworthiness? Think about giving someone else a compliment. What kind of response feels best to you? Most of the time, a compliment is best accepted with a simple "Thank you."

If this is uncomfortable for you, start practicing:

"Good work." "Thank you."

"You look great." "Thank you."

"Nice shirt." "Thank you. I like yours too."
